Pulp & Paper Making – Prolonging the Life of FRP Equipment with HTAC™ Veil

Pulp & Paper Making – Prolonging the Life of FRP Equipment with HTAC™ Veil

Many of the pulp and paper plants in North America are aging – the equipment is old and in need of maintenance and/or repair. Over time the harsh chemicals used in pulping and papermaking degrade the integrity of FRP bleaching towers, pulp retention tanks, J-tubes and FRP chlorine dioxide tanks. Periodic inspection, maintenance, and relining will significantly extend the life of the equipment.

Upon inspection, you may determine that remediation is necessary to maintain the integrity and safety of your pulping and papermaking operation. If the scope of work outlined by your inspector includes FRP relining, you will engage an FRP field services company to do the work for you.

It is important to understand that not all lining veils are the same and the performance will vary depending on the application. The optimal relining solution should provide anticorrosion and abrasion resistance at high temperatures to adequately protect the FRP equipment. It also must meet performance standards and regulatory requirements.

In side-by-side comparison tests of ECTFE, C-glass and polyester veils in sulfuric acid (98% at 250F/121C), sodium hypochlorite (13% at 200F/93C), sodium hydroxide (50% at 250F/121C), and nitric acid (20% at near boil), ECTFE veil performed very well. Only slight discoloration (due to a processing additive that does not deteriorate the ECTFE polymer) and only slight loss of strength in sodium hypochlorite was observed (whereas the others failed or completely dissolved). These tests were performed on veil fabrics, not composite samples, and were immersed in chemicals for 30 days.

For many years ECTFE meltblown was not available on the market. HTAC™ Veil – High Temperature Anti Corrosive meltblown veil – is now being manufactured by Monadnock Non-Wovens (MNW). HTAC is an apertured veil that is easy to laminate and wet-out in the relining process. It may be applied by hand lay-up and roll/tape winding, in an ortho winding or filament winding process.

Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation & New Website

Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation & New Website

Monadnock Non-Wovens LLC (MNW) recently celebrated 25 years of manufacturing meltblown media for a wide range of markets and applications. Originally, MNW produced nonwoven filtration media for vacuum bags. Since then, it has evolved to design new and more high-performance technical products particularly in Automotive and Filtration media.

MNW’s ability to re-invent itself was crucial in responding to the COVID pandemic and recommendations from the CDC in late 2019. MNW began taking contracts to produce meltblown for surgical facemasks to help stem the spread of the virus. Fortunately, we are on the other side of the pandemic and MNW has shifted its focus to other necessary products.

Since the development of HPAM® in 2018, MNW has become an established, reputable, and specified media supplier to the global automotive industry offering Monadnock HPAM high-performance acoustic media.

Early in 2023, MNW introduced HTAC™, a high-temperature anti-corrosive composite media. It is made with ECTFE resin to meet the market need for high-performance filtration and protective media for semiconductor production, paper and pulp manufacturing, chemical storage/transport, and biotechnology.

The most recent product development is a super-hydrophilic meltblown material. As a wicking layer it has very desirable viscous liquid transport properties for use in applications where a dry surface is a necessity. Launch plans include a nursing pad distribution layer and potentially washable absorbent mats and cores used in personal care and pet products. “We have already commercialized the product in hygiene absorbent core applications,” said MNW President Jim Cree.

“It is an interesting time to be in the industrial nonwovens industry,” said Cree. “More and more customers are shifting their innovation sourcing from Asia to North America. With over 25 years of experience, we are well positioned to enter new markets for innovative high-performance composite media.”

A fitting tribute to a quarter century of innovation, MNW’s new website highlights its broad capabilities and the markets it serves. Today, you will find specialty fabrics and lofted nonwovens for sound attenuation, biotechnology, filtration, and other industrial and personal care applications.

For five years now, MNW has manufactured its products with 100% renewable electricity – continuing to support new renewable resource development through the investment in Green-e certified energy projects.

MNW employees are the heart of the organization, and they are committed to sustained growth and success. The team will support MNW through future product innovation over the years to come.

High Temperature Anti-Corrosive ECTFE Media For FRP Apertured Veil

Mt. Pocono, PA – December 5, 2023 – Introducing HTAC Veil, a new generation of veils used in the corrosion barrier of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) equipment. MNW designed and developed the binder free HTAC apertured veil that is produced with meltblown ECTFE (ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) fluoropolymer resin.

Superior to other polymeric materials on the market, the benefits of HTAC Veil include very high chemical and abrasion resistance at high temperatures, and excellent fire retardancy (flame spread index of 0 per ASTM E-84).

HTAC Veil significantly extends the performance, integrity, and life of FRP tanks, tankers, scrubbers, pipes, ducts and stacks. Product characteristics include very high chemical resistance against strong acids, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide and solvents.

With a high permeation resistance, it reduces blistering in hot concentrated hydrochloric acid. It has an apertured hole pattern of IPS-10 and is easy to inspect in a 100 mils FRP corrosion barrier.

“We are pleased to offer the HTAC Veil for critical manufacturing processes,” said MNW President Jim Cree. As for all MNW products, HTAC is manufactured with renewable electricity.
